How to play Word Hunt

Word Hunt is a fast word game on a small grid of letter tiles. Instead of looking for a list of hidden words like a classic word search, you build your own: trace a path through neighbouring letters and every real word you spell scores. Three minutes on the clock, one new daily board for everyone, and unlimited practice boards.

  1. Trace a word. Press on a letter and drag through tiles that touch, across, down or diagonally. Let go to submit. Or tap tiles one at a time and tap the last one again.
  2. Follow the rules. At least three letters, each tile once per word. Qu is one tile worth two letters.
  3. Score big with long words. 3-4 letters: 1 point. 5: 2. 6: 3. 7: 5. 8 or more: 11.
  4. See what you missed. When time runs out, every word on the board is listed. Select one to watch its path light up.

Tips for a higher score

  • Look for common endings first: -ED, -ER, -ES, -ING and -S turn one find into two or three.
  • Work outward from vowels. A vowel in the middle of the board touches up to eight letters.
  • Once you find a short word, try extending it: RATE, RATES, RATED, CRATE, CRATES.
  • Hunt for one long word early. A single eight-letter word is worth eleven three-letter ones.

How do you play Word Hunt?
Word Hunt deals a 4x4 grid of letter tiles. Drag across touching tiles to spell a word, then let go to submit it. Tiles touch in all eight directions, including diagonals, and each tile can be used only once per word. Words must be at least three letters long. You have three minutes to find as many as you can.
How is Word Hunt scored?
Longer words are worth much more. Three- and four-letter words score 1 point, five letters score 2, six letters score 3, seven letters score 5, and eight letters or more score 11. Each word only counts once, no matter how many ways it can be traced.
Is there a new Word Hunt board every day?
Yes. The daily board changes at midnight and is the same for every player, so scores are directly comparable. Your daily score can go on the leaderboard, and playing on consecutive days builds a streak. Practice mode deals unlimited random boards in 4x4 or the bigger 5x5 size.
How does the Qu tile work?
Q almost always needs a U in English, so Q appears on the board as a single Qu tile. Selecting it adds both letters, and it counts as two letters toward a word's length and score. QUIT uses three tiles but scores as a four-letter word.
Which words count?
Word Hunt checks words against a 60,000-word English dictionary built from two openly licensed word lists. Common words, plurals, and verb forms all count. Proper nouns, abbreviations, and hyphenated words do not. When the timer ends you see every word hidden in the board, with the ones you found highlighted.
Can I play Word Hunt on my phone?
Yes. Swipe across the tiles with your finger, or tap them one at a time and tap the last tile again to submit. On a computer you can also type words on your keyboard and press Enter; the matching tiles light up as you type.
